The Empowerment Project #1- I Decide the Person I'll Be
I’m the one that writes my own story
I decide the person I’ll be
What goes in the plot and what will not
Is pretty much up to me
- My Turn on Earth
We have each written a story of our lives. We have made choices along the way that led us to become the kind of friend, daughter, wife, and mother we are today. When we find that our story isn’t what we want it to be, we can actually proactively change that story. If we don’t spend time connecting with our kids, if we’re late to meetings, or if we listen to negative thoughts we can change! We have the power to become a better person – to re-write our story.
When I first met with my mentor, I realized my story with my daughters wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I wanted to connect with them more, to be more intentional about mothering. So I followed her advice:
Find a time when you won’t be rushed when you and Heavenly Father can spend quality time together. Purge your old story. Sit down in a quiet room with a notebook and a paper and write three pages front and back. These pages are a time for you to work through the past. This is a time when you own the story you have created. Work through the baggage and the painful experiences when you felt like you didn’t measure up; when you weren’t who you wanted to be. Apologize on paper to your husband, your kids, whomever it might be. Write anything that comes to mind. You aren’t worried about being kind or selfless; just let yourself feel emotion.
Thoughts create feelings and feelings create action. If you are feeling trapped at home or yelling at your kids, these feelings began as thoughts. Our purpose is to change our thoughts by envisioning who you want to become – by creating a new story. Now, in prayer, ask Father to help you write your new story. Envision what you want your life to look like. Are you on time? This doesn’t have to be perfect, just write who you want to be. (Note: this new story will be shorter than your old story and it's just a draft. We're going deeper later). You are going to start reading this new story morning and night out loud to yourself in the mirror. You are going to change your old habits. You are going to become who you want to be!
